Observation Narrative
The habitat of this plot is a gently sloping, exposed rocky summit on a predominant spur of Haw Orchard Mountain. The large, craggy outcrop of rhyolite bedrock supports sparse shrub and herbaceous vegetation characterized by severely stunted Betula allegheniensis, Gaylussacia baccata, Saxifraga michauxii, Carex pensylvanica, Danthonia compressa, Heuchera villosa var. villosa and Solidago roanensis. Rock tripe and crustose lichens cover most of the exposed rock surfaces.
South slope of Haw Orchard Mountain. Plot located on Listening Rock, an exposed outcrop adjacent to the Listening Rock Trail, ca. 0.3 mi southwest of trailhead on road to Visitors Center.
