Observation Narrative ? Plot is located in a bouldery, second-growth northern hardwood - red spruce forest on northeast slope of Haw Orchard Mountain, ca. 75 m west of Stampers Branch Trail at a point ca. 0.2 mi northeast of Visitors Center. This area may have been originally occupied by red spruce forest and was apparently cut over, burned, and grazed around 1900. Substantial reproduction of red spruce in all the lower strata of the current stand, along with a lack of young yellow birch, suggests a future successional trend toward spruce dominance.
