Observation Narrative
Vegetation here is an "acidic cove forest" dominated by Betula allegheniensis, Tsuga canadensis and Rhododendron maximum. The area was logged via narrow gauge railroad ca. 75 years ago, but some large trees were spared, including a gnarled, 87-cm dbh Betula allegheniensis in the plot. Hemlock wooly adelgid has become established here and many Tsuga specimens in and around the plot are particularly defoliated.
Plot located on toe slope along Quebec Branch, ca. 75 m southeast (downslope) of the Appalachian Trail at a point ca. 0.6 mi southwest of the northern park boundary and 0.65 mi NNE of Massie Gap.
