Observation Narrative
According to the 1992 Virginia community classification, the presence of Hepatica acutiloba would be diagnostic of permesotrophic conditions. However, this plant might, in future drafts, represent a mesotrophic indicator. Plot on a convex protuberance on an otherwise regular slope. It is interesting to note the similarities and differences between this mesotrophic scrub vegetation and the mesotrophic forest vegetation documented in plot ROCB007 at Lovers Leap along the Maury River.
Plot located on upper portion of steep NNW-facing slope above Walker Creek, 0.3 mi southwest of the 1916 ft elevation point shown on 1965 USGS quad (along Rt. 42).
Thuja occidentalis range up to 16 cm dbh.
Old burn scars on large dead Thuja. The current physiognomy is scrub, but this appears the result of post-fire revegetation. with time and lack of fire, a woodland physiognomy is to be expected here.
