Observation Narrative
Disturbance appears to be a salient feature of this vegetation, which likely remains in fairly open condition as a consequence of shallow, drought-prone soils; periodic wind storms, and fire. Most trees have fire scars or char marks on lower 2-3 m of bole, and charred wood is present in plot. Scorched stems of Vaccinium pallidum suggest fairly recent fire. Downed boles and branches occur throughout plot, and stand contains numerous felled or partially uprooted trees. A few snags of Pinus virginiana are present, and most living individuals
exhibit poor crown development. Quercus stellata in particular has gnarled growth form.
