Observation Narrative
A mesic, mesotrophic version of a Quercus rubra and Quercus alba dominated medium high elevation sub-level ridge crest forest, growing on an unusually deep and stone free fine sandy loam, in a topographic saddle at a 3-point intersection of two ridges. The lush, tall herb layer is distinctive. The dominance of Osmunda claytoniana here is restricted to the northeastern aspect of the saddle. Quercus alba is a minor component here probably due to logging some decades ago. Castanea dentata and Prunus serotina were also important in the canopy.
Plot located 500 ft southwest of Thomas Spring.
