Observation Narrative
A mesotrophic woodland on a dry, rocky narrow ridge crest. Exposed position promotes windthrow and ice damage, creating frequent canopy openings and a well developed shrub layer. The absence of pines and heaths, coupled with the occurrence of mesotrophic indicators and high soil pH and Ca and Mg values, strongly suggests a base rich bedrock here.
Plot located ca. 2200 ft southwest of Thomas Spring, on crest of narrow red-rock spine just east of large Quercus montana.
Oi: 4-8 cm thick
Oe: 1-11 cm thick
Oa: 4 cm thick; black horizon is mostly organic matter with minimal component of silty loam
A (or B): 8+ cm thick: very stony, loamy fine sand, reddish; in many spots this horizon is not present
R: avg. depth of 13 cm
