Observation Narrative
A mesic, submesotrophic old growth Quercus montana and Quercus rubra dominated forest in a steep, shallow, downhill running horizontal concavity or swale, with an extremely stony soil, but without talus. The reddish brown stones are small and flattened. Slope shape, which concentrates water nutrients in the swale appears to be the primary factor generating this community. On the convex slopes on either side of the swale, which have the same aspect and appear to be on the same geology, there is a sudden transition to Quercus montana and heath dominated forest.
Plot located ca. 600 ft downslope and WSW from plot GJNF311, 2.0 mi N3W of Morning Knob.
