Observation Narrative
This plot best represents oligotrophic, lichen-rich, Pinus virginiana-dominated sparse woodland and scrub communities commonly found on upper south and southwest facing convex slopes and narrow crests in the shale (all formations) country. Cladina typically dominates the herb layer. This plot was centered on the crest and includes a bit what is best considered part of a different community: the oak-hickory forest of the east facing slope of the ridge. These forest elements in the plot, but not characteristic of the sparse woodland/scrub community overall, are the importance of Carya spp. and Crataegus.
Plot located 2.1 km WNW of Blue Spring Run on crest of a shale spur ridge.
