Observation Narrative ? This is a very open Pinus pungens - scrub oak / heath forest restricted to the south westerly aspects of the convex side slopes of a rapidly percolating, gravelly, cobbly sand, so the SCS mapping of the site as Berks-Wiekert complex may be incorrect. Tree oaks are only slowly invading this site, but Quercus coccinea is the only one of any importance. In the absence of fire, however, it is reproducing better that the Pinus spp. Plot located 112 ft S15W from informal trail leading southeast from FR 350. Point of departure from trail is at firest triple-trunked Quercus montana (all stems ca. 8 in dbh), ca. 350 ft along trail from road edge. Plot center ca. 1.5 km SSE of Frozen Knob.
