Observation Narrative
An unusual (in the Virginia mountains) herbaceous community, situated in the lowest part of a bench depression or sag. Evidently maintained by seasonal flooding, perhaps in combination with turkey and/or deer browsing. That the area is periodically flooded, at least in the early spring, is clear from water marks on surrounding trees and April aerial photos. Hydrophytic species are largely absent, however, which strongly suggests a non-hydric soil - i.e., well-drained conditions most of the growing season. Representative high water marks on trees: 44, 32, 50 cm.
Plot located ca. 1.6 mi east of Iron Hill Springs, ca. 1800 ft northwest of FR 350, and just west of new Forest Service road built since 1994.
