Observation Narrative
A classic shale barren community, with many shale barren endemics and near endemics: e.g., Packera antennariifolia, Eriogonum allenii, Clematis albicoma and the rare Cheilanthes eatonii. As with many of the best (i.e., endemic-rich), largest barrens, undercutting by a major stream has maintained a very steep slope with a high proportion of exposed shale bedrock. It has also in common with most other endemic rich barrens a southerly aspect and being on the Brallier Formation. There are really two major open communities here which share a number of herbs: the scrub community, represented by this plot, on a channery armored sloping soil and a lithophytic herbaceous community on the very steep outcrops (not sampled). A relatively high pH and medium high Ca levels suggest a calcareous component in the bedrock. Plant indicators of a more fertile substrate compared with other shale scrub and woodlands are Cercis canadensis and Fraxinus americana.
Plot located on steep, sloping terrace between vertical cliffs of steep shale barren just north of Rt. 18 crossing of Potts Creek with gauging station, 1.3 km southwest of Blue Spring Run.
