Observation Narrative
A successionally immature mixed deciduous forest following opening of canopy by death of dominant or co-dominant Castanea dentata. The forest has some surprisingly floristic features for its position on a dry, convex, stony ridge crest - e.g., the importance of Liriodendron tulipifera and the occurrence of Juglans nigra. This community is on the crest of a "whaleback," a low, rounded secondary anticlinal ridge at the foot of the main anticlinal sandstone-capped Peters Mountain ridge. Whalebacks have a core of Ordovician limestone, which have in some cases been exposed by erosion at the top of the ridge first. The vigor of Liriodendron on a dry site, the presence of Juglans, and the absence of heaths are strongly suggestive that calcareous rock is influencing the vegetation here, a conclusion supported by moderately high Ca and Mg levels in the A horizon.
Plot located ca. 1.3 mi ENE of Hematite, on crest of "whaleback" ridge.
