Observation Narrative
An oligotrophic, somewhat xeric, woodland forest dominated by Pinus pungens, Quercus ilicifolia, Nyssa sylvatica and heaths. This community is a nearly constant unit in the Ridge and Valley province on the steep, rocky, south sides of the spur ridges running down the northwest sides of the main ridges, except where the underlying bedrock is limestone. There is a tension between the pines and Quercus montana, which appears likely to favor the oaks over time if fire is absent and the pines if fire occurs before the oaks get large and thick-barked.
