Observation Narrative
This plot is representative of the xeric, species-poor Pinus virginiana-dominated woodlands, or in places scrub (highest stratum <6 cm), that occupy large areas of the highly dissected portions of the shale geologic unit. This community, intermediate in fertility and pH between that represented by plot GJNF318 and the "shale barren" plots GJNF325 and GJNF329, occupies the largest portion of the steep slopes in the shale country with aspects from about 180 to 280 degrees. This community is virtually restricted to these aspects. Vaccinium pallidum is patchy in occurrence and less abundant overall in this community than represented by this plot.
Plot located on shaly, Pinus virginiana-dominated, west-facing slope overlooking Cast Steel Run just downstream of confluence with unnamed tributary draining Pond Flat area.
