Observation Narrative
This 3-acre open, sedgy wetland is perennially saturated due to groundwater seepage. Muck is soft and over 1.5 m. deep toward the wetland center. Sanguisorba canadensis, which typically grows 5-6 feet tall, is less than knee-high in this nutrient-impoverished wetland. More study of this extraordinary wetland is needed.
Plot located ca. 5 m from upland edge.
Additional species observed in the open wetland are Alnus serrulata, Fimbristylis puberula, Calopogon tuberosus, Spiraea tomentosa, Solidago uliginosa, Muhlenbergia glomerata, Packera paupercula, Glyceria sp., Onoclea sensibilis, Prunella vulgaris and Houstonia caerulea.
