Observation Narrative
This open seepage wetland is somewhat less than 100 sq. m in size, but yet the plant community is evidently viable. The rare plants Helenium brevifolium and Parnassia grandifolia are abundant in this small area. This wetland is shaded by these trees and shrubs: Acer rubrum, Pinus rigida, Quercus stellata, Smilax rotundifolia and Alnus serrulata.
Within 100 m upstream occurs another similar opening, littered with old cow bones. Both areas are lightly grazed. The other wetland is similar, but it grades into dry-to-mesic vegetation which is shallow to bedrock. Plants here include Packera paupercula, Helenium brevifolium, Parnassia grandifolia, Schizachyrium scoparium, Liatris pilosa, Agalinis tenuifolia, Panicum sp., Dichanthelium dichotomum, Viola cucullata, Solidago nemoralis, Spiranthes gracilis, Waldsteinia fragarioides, Botrychium dissectum, Spiraea alba var. latifolia, Prunella vulgaris, Setaria sp., Potentilla sp., Epigaea repens, Juncus dudleyi, Hypericum punctatum and Sanguisorba canadensis. Trees scattered along the edge of the opening are Pinus rigida, Quercus stellata, Pinus strobus and Acer rubrum.
