Observation Narrative
Seepage emerges from the western edge of this quarter-acre open wetland and flows across a very gentle slope to a small stream which lies a few meters to the east. A few boulders are present and these support hummock species such as Panicum virgatum. The underlying talc-rich bedrock suggests that the seepage water is very high in magnesium, and this mineral may contribute to the harsh, nutrient-poor growing conditions in the wetland. Soils are perennially saturated.
Plot situated in the middle of this small, open wetland; plot orientation follows that of the wetland. Located outside the plot in swampy woods are Carex vesicaria and a single individual of Juniperus communis var. depressa.
