Observation Narrative
This plot lies just south of a barbed wire fence, in the seepage swamp, ca. 10 m from the creek channel on the west side. The vegetation here has not been recently grazed. Where regularly grazed, just across the fence, plants such as Helenium brevifolium and Parnassia grandifolia are much more abundant. Plants restricted to the ungrazed area - the plot - include Sphagnum and Lilium cf. grayi. Because the area was logged about 30 years ago, I suspect that the woodland structure of the vegetation is temporary. This woodland may soon become forest as young sprout red maples gradually attain canopy stature. About 50 m to the north, a small harsh seep is entirely open and will likely remain so due to soil conditions and hydrology.
Cypripedium acaule, Xyris torta and Prunella vulgaris occur in regularly grazed portion of the wetland.
