Observation Narrative ? A pitch pine-black jack oak woodland on a steep, SE facing slope. Quercus marilandica appears faithful to the southerly aspect in this area, as it is nearly absent from the otherwise similar vegetation on oligotrophic sands with a northerly aspect. Taller trees, stronger presence of tree oaks suggest conditions less severe than in pitch pine-heath-scrub oak woodlands on NW aspects of Third Mountain nearby. The relatively thin duff in the plot is probably due to fluvial erosion on the horizontally concave slope. This is a local condition and not typical of the community entity. This plot probably has more herb spp. that favor exposed mineral soil than is typical of the community as a whole. Cover estimated as if all leaves were present; autumnal leaffall well along. Plot located ca. 100 ft off trail #416 on N60E bearing from place on trail where many boulders have been piled up on the downhill side, ca. 0.91 km west of knoll just north of Peterfish Gap.
