Observation Narrative
Plot located between south edge and open central pool of Green Pond, a pristine and highly scenic ridgecrest mountain pond supporting VA's only known population of the northern Carex aquatilis, along with Vaccinium macrocarpon, Dulichium arundinaceum, an unidentified Utricularia sp and a few other species. The plant community here is not known elsewhere in the state. At least the center of the pond, and perhaps the entire habitat can be considered semipermanently flooded. The wetland is situated where Antietam quartzite, the local acidic ridge former, is weathered through to the Shady Formation. The latter forms a clayey saprolite which probably accounts for the occurrence of Carex aquatilis since the species typically occurs in calcareous or non-acidic habitats.
