Observation Narrative
A totally pristine greenstone outcrop barren characterized by a patchwork of woody scrub, herbaceous lithophytes and lichen-covered bedrock surfaces. Normally this habitat is quite xeric, but on the date of sampling, considerable local seepage was flowing down the outcrop surfaces following nearly a week a heavy rains.
Western slope of the Blue Ridge near Laurel Springs Gap. Plot located near the top of a large, sloping greenstone outcrop, ca. 0.4 mi downslope from the Blue Ridge Parkway and 0.8 mi WNW of Laurel Springs Gap.
No profile development; thin pockets/mats of organic rich silty clay soil developed locally on rock surfaces and in crevices; sample very difficult to extract.
