Observation Narrative ? Plot location: Maple Flats pond complex, N of Coal Road, E of Kennedy Creek, W of Canada Run. Pond is located ca. 0.3 miles WNW of Spring Pond. Rock Types Present: bedrock covered by a thick alluvial fan of metasedimentary materials. This plot is located near the center of this pond, one of the largest of the Maple Flats complex. This basin is < 1 m deep when full and has an irregular hydroperiod (Buhlmann, Mitchell & Smith 1999). Vegetation is essentially herbaceous, with scattered islands of small Quercus palustris and Nyssa sylvatica trees. The draw-down vegetation is dominated first by Eleocharis acicularis and later by Panicum spp. The state-rare graminoids Cyperus dentatus and Eleocharis melanocarpa form abundant patches in some years but are absent or uncommon in others; they were abundant on the date of sampling.
