Observation Narrative ? Plot location: Maple Flats pond complex, ca. 0.9 miles N of Coal Road where it crosses Canada Run. Rock Types Present: bedrock covered by a thick alluvial fan of metasedimentary materials. This small sinkhole pond (ca. 25 X 30 m) has an irregular hydroperiod and does not fill completely (< 1m deep) in all years (Buhlmann, Mitchell & Smith 1999). The plot is located in the lowest part of the basin and includes scattered individuals and islands of Quercus palustris trees. The habitat was very dry on the date of sampling, with Panicum verrucosum heavily dominated a desiccated herb layer.
