Observation Narrative
Plot location: Maple Flats pond complex, ca. 0.4 miles N of the Coal Road where it crosses Canada Run.
Rock Types Present: bedrock covered by a thick alluvial fan of metasedimentary materials.
This plot stretches from the N edge to the center of the pond and contains two Quercus palustris trees. Several snags of this species are also present, but the cause of the mortality is unclear. The herbaceous vegetation, like many other ponds in the area, is dominated by Panicum spp., but has much higher species richness (n = 26) than similar plots sampled in the Maple Flats or Loves Run ponds. Several species of rare occurrence in the area thrive in this basin, including Sabatia campanulata, Hypericum gymnanthum, Panicum virgatum, and Phoradendron leucarpum.
