Observation Narrative
Plot location: Maple Flats pond complex, ca. 0.4 miles NNE of Coal Road where it crosses Canada Run.
Rock Types Present: bedrock covered by a thick alluvial fan of metasedimentary materials.
This is a very unusual, rarely flooded sinkhole pond dominated by more or less xerophytic low shrub and herbaceous vegetation, including Salix occidentalis, Schizachyrium scoparium, Sorghastrum nutans, and Baptisia tinctoria. A single Quercus palustris tree occurs near the pond center and colonies of Cladina lichens are locally abundant.
