Observation Narrative
Plot location: N of Coal Road and E of Gum Springs Branch. Pond is located 220 m N of pipeline ROW and 0.3 miles NE of BM 1893.
Field estimate from topo: (UTME): 666638 (UTMN): 4205772.
Rock Types Present: bedrock covered by a thick alluvial fan of metasedimentary materials.
Plot is located at the NE end of a large (> one acre) sinkhole pond. This habitat is slightly higher than that of plot LOVE002 at the SW end of the basin, and presumably has a shorter hydroperiod. The vegetation resembles a "savanna" of stunted Diospyros virginiana, with a dense graminoid herb layer dominated by Panicum verrucosum. The northern disjunct Hypericum boreale is exceptionally abundant here under the grasses.
