Observation Narrative
Plot location: ca. 0.6 miles NW of the Coal Road where it crosses Loves Run.
Rock Types Present: bedrock covered by a thick alluvial fan of metasedimentary materials.
This plot is located on the edge of a large, circular sinkhole pond that is several meters deep when full (according to Buhlmann, Mitchell & Smith 1999). The central section (ca. 30 m in diameter) appears to fill frequently, while the greater portion of the basin is slightly higher and fills infrequently. Vegetation of the plot area is mostly herbaceous with a few scattered, shrubby Diospyros virginiana. The dense herb layer is heavily dominated by Panicum rigidulum var. rigidulum but is more diverse than in many similar ponds.
