Observation Narrative
Plot located ca. 20 m west of trail at height of land on crest of ridge, ca. 0.2 mi west of Seeley-Woodworth Shelter. On gentle ridge crest granitic slopes as this, soils appear to be fertile. The scarcity of surface stones and boulders suggests that the soils are relatively deep and uneroded. I suspect that on level terrain such as this, organic matter is "composted" into the underlying soil with minimal losses of nutrients due to lateral transport and erosion. Due to the effects of exposure, the trees are not especially tall and gaps/openings surround each crown. Nearby, on level terrain and in gentle "saddles" of the ridge crest, grow Heracleum maximum and Agastache scrophulariifolia. Other trees on this ridge in similar vegetation include Acer saccharum, Quercus alba and Magnolia acuminata.
Measured trees in plot (dbh in cm.): Quercus rubra (44.5), Prunus serotina (34.7).
