Observation Narrative
Plot located on a cool, bouldery, north-facing, lower rich slope directly above North Fork Piney River, ca. 50 m downstream of the cascading "flume." Stake planted in patch of Aconitum reclinatum. The plot unavoidably contains internal heterogeneity: the upslope portion is bouldery, whereas the downslope portion appears to be influenced by discharge of subsurface water and hence supports most of the Cimicifuga americana and Aconitum reclinatum. Certainly this is one of the more interesting and localized plant communities to be found in the upper Piney River watershed.
Measured trees in plot (dbh in cm.): Tsuga canadensis (43.8), Betula allegheniensis (75.4).
