Observation Narrative
Plot situated at summit of the hill, north of Bald Mountain Trail and south of the first "A" in the word "NATIONAL" shown on the 1982 quad map. The soils here are markedly different from those in Plot GPNF711, 200 m. downslope. At this sandstone/quartzite summit, a distinct eluvial horizon is present; such a horizon is lacking at GPNF711. Fertility is evidently extremely low at this summit and evergreen species predominate. Exposure to wind/ice is pronounced here. Pinus strobus has a slightly "flagged" appearance. The evergreen scrub vegetation is so thick a bear "nest" was found in the plot. The bear spent the winter curled up under this scrub.
