Observation Narrative
A sometimes sparse pitch pine-scrub oak woodland situated on a broad nearly level spur ridge crest. The plot is not far from the edge of this community and the tree cover in the plot is probably higher than in much of the rest of this community. Pinus rigida in the 6-10 m. stratum has a higher cover generally throughout the area in proportion to the Quercus montana and Quercus coccinea than is represented in the plot. Salient features of the community: the relatively deep, sand soil with few stones; the absence of Acer rubrum; Pinus pungens is present, but very rare, though it becomes common as the slopes drop off the side; Pinus rigida 15-20 m. tall are scattered throughout the community thinly.
Plot located approximately 300 m WSW of Green Pond and about 25 m off Trail # 500 to NNW. Trail # 500 leads WSW from Green Pond down into St. Mary's Wilderness Area.
