Observation Narrative
Extraordinarily diverse but extremely localized stand of potentially old-growth oak-hickory woodland along the crest of Grassy Hill. Carya glabra is the leading dominant in the stunted overstory, in which stratum Quercus alba and Q. rubra are also present. Q. montana and Q. stellata are largely confined to subcanopy and shrub layers, respectively. Few species attain > 1-2% cover, and composition varies considerably within plot. Leaf litter is very thin and patchy; estimate of 80% surficial cover of organic matter may be high, and estimate of downed wood, much of which is fine material, may be low.
Tree age data collected by Curtis Hutto, Claiborne Woodall, Paul Clarke, and Chris Ludwig during 24 May 1999 visit to this stand.
From Carya glabra (27 cm dbh): 3.1 m @ 123 deg to stake A.
