Observation Narrative
Patchy, somewhat disturbed, but extraordinarily diverse stand on south-facing slope with several mafic indicators, magnesiophiles, or other species uncommonly encountered at Grassy Hill NAP. Intent was to establish plot in the mafic woodland that Tom Rawinski first identified. Although Quercus stellata is not as abundant as had been expected, notable species present are Piptochaetium avenaceum, Andropogon gerardii, Clematis ochroleuca, Lonicera dioica, and Scleria oligantha. Stand has experienced moderate overstory disturbance; modules 6 and 7 in particular contain several downed boles, a small (< 50 sq. m) gap, and a high density of Smilax rotundifolia (stem tallies only approximate).
Old ATV trail provides access near plot. Plot origin (stake A) is ca. 15 m from subtle ravine.
0 - 2 - leaf litter
2 - 3 - dark brown O horizon
3 - light (in module 9) to medium brown, dense, rocky clay loam, abounding in pebbles and fine roots and apparently shallow
