Observation Narrative
The plot documents pioneer herbaceous vegetation that has gained a foothold on deeper, more continuous moss mats at the upper edge of a massive (10-acre), sloping granitic exposure. Exfoliation features are visible in several places on the outcrop, which get its name from long linear streaks of Grimmia laevigata and other dark mosses that grow along the courses of ephemeral seepage flows on the rock face. The distinctive floristic composition here is characterized by Talinum teretifolium and Minuartia glabra, both common on lower elevation granitic outcrops; Saxifraga michauxii, a species typical of various high elevation outcrops; and Dodecatheon meadia ssp. meadia, a forb most commonly associated with basic or calcareous habitats.
Plot located on upper edge of large granite exposure (Striped Rock) on south slope of Point Lookout Mountain, 1.0 mi north of junction of US 21 and Rt. 654.
