Observation Narrative
A dry, rather rich ash-hickory woodland situated in shallow soils around the upper edges of a massive granitic exposure. The canopy of this woodland is currently very open due to the recent mortality (apparently drought-caused) of several large hickory specimens. At least moderately high base cation saturation levels in soils at this site are indicated by the presence of nutrient-demanding species such as Juglans nigra, Allium cernuum, Dodecatheon meadia ssp. meadia and Phacelia dubia var. dubia.
Plot located on upper edge of large granite exposure (Striped Rock) on south slope of Point Lookout Mountain, 1.0 mi north of junction of US 21 and Rt. 654.
