Observation Narrative ? Working around considerable mortality of both Tsuga canadensis and Betula allegheniensis in the stand, this plot was positioned to avoid canopy gaps with increased herbaceous cover. Very low species richness (n=12) probably resulted from poor soils, high elevation and heavy shade cast by the dominant Tsuga. Upper north slope of Slate Springs Mountain, on western flank of Shenandoah Mountain. Plot located in north-facing concavity / ravine head, ca. 0.3 mi west of the summit of Flagpole Knob.
