Observation Narrative
This plot, centered at the toe of a steep bouldery slope includes a portion of more or less oligotrophic boulder terrace vegetation, as well as the more mesotrophic colluvial slope vegetation. Community is classified as mesotrophic forest on the basis of conditional character species Laportea canadensis, Tilia americana (heterophylla?) and Aristolochia macrophylla. Red oaks grow to impressive stature on these moderately fertile, moist soils. The large trees in this plot are likely the result of a mesotrophic nutrient regime, adequate moisture, and the fact that the trees are old, protected in the ravine bottom from periodic intense, killing fires. Total basal area is approximately three times that found on dry, oligotrophic, formerly burned sites (cf. plots GRNF701 and GRNF703).
Plot located in a ravine bottom 0.2 mi (350 m) west of Long Run Road, ca. 200 m above confluence with Little Laurel Run.
