Observation Narrative
Plot is situated in a semi-open forest on a steep, mid-slope, sandstone talus. Acer rubrum is a prominent tree in this forest, apparently because of the interrupted canopy of larger oaks and the availability of sunlight. Where boulders are especially abundant, tree growth is scattered, and a modest amount of light reaches the forest floor. A small portion of the plot, not on a talus substrate, supports the ericads Gaylussacia baccata, Vaccinium pallidum and Vaccinium stamineum. Although a single clump of Tilia americana is present, suggesting mesotrophic conditions, the overall community trophic regime is best characterized as submesotrophic. Soils appear to be slightly enriched due to lateral movement of moisture and nutrients.
Take Rader Mountain Trail southward from Hall Spring Road to the last wildlife clearing; plot GRNF304 is on ridge crest. This plot located by heading ca. 100 ft north from plot GRNF304 and thence downslope ca. 200 ft in elevation. Plot marked with rebar stake; nearby tree marked with orange flagging.
