Observation Narrative
Plot location: ravine tributary of Grove Creek, ca. 0.6 miles NW of Sewage Treatment Plant, NE of Carters Grove Plantation.
Rock Types Present: (shell fragments present in mineral soil)
This plot is situated on a lower ravine slope that has downcut into lower Pliocene shell deposits of the Yorktown Formation. Mesic, calcareous soils here support a mixed hardwood forest with a number of regionally uncommon or rare species. This part of the stand (see also plots GROC001, GROC003, and GROC005) has a mixed overstory of tall Fagus grandifolia, Liriodendron tulipifera, and Tilia americana, while Ulmus rubra and Acer barbatum are prevalent in sub-canopy tree layers. Asimina triloba and Deparia acrostichoides form large clones in the shrub and herb layers, respectively. Herbivory by white-tailed deer is a noticeable problem here.
