Observation Narrative
The plot is located on a small, upper-slope spur on a large bluff bordering the Potomac River downstream from Chain Bridge. The rather steep slope in the plot plunges to a vertical cliff at the lower end. The forest vegetation here is very lush, with massive colonies of Eurybia divaricata dominating the herb layer. Tree layers are very mixed, with various oaks, hickories, Fraxinus americana, and Ostrya virginiana. Although much of the large bluff below Chain Bridge has been severely disturbed by historical quarrying and the construction of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, this site appears to be a small relict of relatively undisturbed vegetation.
