Observation Narrative
The plot was positioned in a very steep, very dense oak/ heath forest, which represents a relic of natural vegetation on the much-quarried Arlington bluff of the Potomac Gorge. The site is a somewhat sheltered, north-facing slope flanking the mouth of Gulf Branch. Soils are extremely acidic and infertile. Rhododendron maximum, a very rare species in the northern Virginia Piedmont, is a noteworthy component of the ericaceous understory. This site is well protected from deer grazing, as evidenced by the very robust size of Medeola virginiana, Solidago bicolor, and other herbaceous plants.
