Observation Narrative
A long, narrow plot configuration was used in an attempt to capture vegetation of a low, bouldery deposition bar along the shore of the Potomac River below Chain Bridge. Although greatly dominated by Justicia americana, quantitative analysis suggests that this plot is compositionally heterogeneous, having far greater species richness than other Justicia-dominated stands along the Potomac. A rapid gradient from an adjacent, well-drained sandy bar to the sampled, seasonally flooded boulder bar is probably responsible for this, with many of the sand-bar species "spilling over" into the plot. Much of the plot area is apparently submersed for long periods of the year, and is also subject to occasional scouring floods during periods of low-water exposure.
