Observation Narrative
Plot located on NNW-facing ravine slope south of Back Creek and 0.3 mi south of Blowing Springs Campground. Plot is representative of extensive forests on mesic residual, middle slopes of the Blowing Springs area. Underlying bedrock is interbedded limestone and sandstone of the Ridgely, Helderburg and Cayugan formations. Soils here are weathered on places and only moderately fertile compared to the deep colluvial soils of the lower slopes bordering the stream. Tree composition is mixed, but Acer saccharum, Quercus rubra, Carya spp. and Quercus alba are usually most predominant. Ageratina altissima and Bromus pubescens are usually abundant in the somewhat open herbaceous layer, perhaps due to deer browse.
