Observation Narrative
Plot located along the Jackson River, 0.5 mi SW of its confluence with Muddy Run. This plot represents an extremely rich, calcareous hardwood forest occupying a steep, mesic, southeast facing slope on Silurian limestone. Despite strong dominance by Jeffersonia diphylla and other leafy spring ephemerals, species richness is very high in the plot (n=83). Absent from this area are a number of low elevation species in similar communities farther east in Virginia, e.g. Asimina triloba, Trillium sessile, etc.
