Observation Narrative
Southeast-facing slope along the Jackson River, ca. 0.2 mi NW of the mouth of Limekiln Run. A mesic, but not especially rich limestone lower slope, supporting vegetation somewhat intermediate between the Acer nigrum-Tilia/ Jeffersonia diphylla stands and drier oak-hickory stands found nearby. Slopes above the plot appear to be distinctly acidic and are probably underlain by arenaceous limestone, chert or interbedded sandstone. Several acidophiles (Clintonia umbellata, Rhododendron calendulaceum, etc.) occur as spillovers in the plot.
