Observation Narrative
Stand has experienced multiple disturbances, but this plot is probably representative of prevailing vegetation at this local area of relatively rich soil. Numerous stumps indicate past logging, and old roads and possibly bulldozed mounds are evident. Stand may have been selectively logged most recently about 30 years ago. Herbaceous composition and lack of tree regeneration suggest heavy deer browse. Coarse woody debris abounds and may date to ice storms within the past decade. Mild herbivory by native phytophagous insects is occurring, and hence canopy cover is difficult to estimate. Several understory oak snags are present. Osmunda claytoniana is patchily distributed throughout stand; one such patch downslope is associated with local seepage zone.
