Observation Narrative ? This plot represents a rich type of northern hardwood forest which characterizes north facing concavities on upper slopes of the Allegheny Mountain/Laurel Fork area. Nutrient demanding species such as basswood (Tilia americana), blue cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides) and ramps (Allium tricoccum) are prevalent in the type. The forest is relatively young, and the landscape is scarred from cable logging operations in the 1920s. Heavy deer browse impacts have greatly influenced the composition and vigor of the herbaceous and lower woody layers. Gypsy moth is currently present in small numbers, but their population and impact can be expected to increase dramatically in the future. Measured trees in plot (dbh in cm.): Acer saccharum (70,39,34), Tilia americana (45,40,39), all in good condition.
