Observation Narrative ? This plot documents a young, even-age stand of black birch (Betula lenta) which followed clearing of clearcutting and probably fire. Huge carpets of the northern clubmosses Lycopodium annotinum and L. obscurum var. dendroideum cover the forest floor, reflecting the cold climatic conditions and the nutrient poor status of soils on this NW facing slope. An even age understory/shrub layer of red spruce (Picea rubens) speaks to the probable future replacement of birch by spruce as the stand matures. Measured trees in plot (dbh in cm.): Betula lenta (22,22,21), Populus grandifolia (23), Tsuga canadensis (34), Acer rubrum (24).
