Observation Narrative
This plot represents a rich type of northern hardwood forest which characterizes north facing concavities on upper slopes of the Allegheny Mountain/Laurel Fork area. Nutrient demanding species such as blue cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides) and squirrel corn (Dicentra canadensis) are prevalent in this type. The forest is relatively young and the landscape is scarred from cable logging operations in the 1920s. White ash (Fraxinus americana) currently dominates the canopy in this secondary stand. Recent windthrows of ash and black cherry (Prunus serotina) will provide immediate opportunities for young sugar maple (Acer saccharum), which dominates the lower woody layers, to move into a dominant canopy position. Heavy deer browse impacts have greatly influenced the composition of the herbaceous layers, favoring the unpalatable blue cohosh. Measured trees in plot (dbh in cm.): Fraxinus americana (42,43,34,33,31), Tilia americana (46,45), Acer saccharum (29,23), Prunus serotina (38,37).
